       Russell Group invitation acknowledges Queen's world-class role

Queen's University was today invited to join the Ivy League of UK universities, acknowledging its role as a world-class centre of excellence in research and education.

The University has been accepted for membership of the elite Russell Group of UK universities, thereby joining an association of 19 major research-intensive universities which include the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Edinburgh and University College London.

Welcoming today’s news, Queen’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Gregson said: "Queen’s is delighted to join the Russell Group of UK universities.
"We provide leadership in research and education, delivering for the economy and creating international connections with business and academia.

“This invitation is tremendous news. It enhances our role as an attractive destination for postgraduate students, businesses and investment. It also establishes Queen’s and Northern Ireland as one of the main learning centres in the UK.
"Russell Group membership is recognition of the outstanding contributions of our staff over many years and it will enhance the Queen's Experience for future generations of students”.

Since taking up post as Vice-Chancellor in August 2004, Professor Gregson has led the implementation of Queen’s Vision to secure its position as an international university rooted in Northern Ireland and offering research and education programmes which are competitive with the best in the world. Underpinning this Vision is an investment of more than £250 million in staff, students and facilities over the next five years. The University is actively recruiting some 140 new academic staff from around the globe,and major projects include a £45 million new library and a £20 million investment in sport and the Students’ Union.
A range of exciting new multi-disciplinary research initiatives are building on Queen’s track record of excellence in crucial areas of research such as sustainability, Irish Studies, healthcare improvement and child protection and welfare.
Just last month, the University announced a new partnership with Georgetown University in Washington DC and a new £10 million Institute for a Sustainable World – an initiative designed to tackle one of the major global challenges of the 21st century.
Described by the Vice-Chancellor as the University’s response to “perhaps the greatest issue facing civilisation today”, the Institute will build on Queen’s world-leading research and teaching strengths in science, engineering, law, governance and the social sciences.
