PhD in Computer Science 1995
¥xÆW¦P¾Ç·|·|ªø §@ªÌ:±ç§Ó¶¯¥ý¥Í (¹q¸£¬ì¾Ç³Õ¤h) I previously completed a Masters in Computing in Taiwan. I came to Queen's University on the recommendation of a past PhD Physics graduate of Queen's who told me that the press image of Northern Ireland was greatly exaggerated and that the area round Queen's was fine. I also met the Queen's University Student Support Officer at an Education Exhibition in Taipei and the information he provided for me and my family was extremely helpful. I am completing my fourth and final year of my PhD on Object Orientated Database Analysis. The quality of research at Queen's is very high and the people here are very friendly. I have not experienced the social order problems that some of my friends studying on the mainland have encountered. The University was very helpful in obtaining convenient accommodation for me and my family and I found the pre-sessional English language programme of great benefit. §@ªÌ:¶À¥ßÍQ¥ý¥Í (¹q¸£¬ì¾Ç»PÀ³¥ÎºÓ¤h) As President of the Taiwanese Society I have made a great many friends across the University. Although my course is quite intense, I think it is important to take time out. I am involved in organising social events, meals out and trips to places such as The Giant's Causeway, Derry and Bangor. I also enjoy nothing more than visiting the Physical Education Centre fore a session in the gym, a swim or a game of badminton. One of the best things about living in Belfast is the people. Everyone is very friendly. However, one of the most fascinating things about Northern Ireland is the climate, it's so unpredictable. It's raining one moment and sunny the next! I studied for my first degree in Civil Engineering in Taiwan but decided that many more doors would open to me if I had a qualification in computers. I would recommend Queen's University to postgrad students from my country and other part of the world. I think that it's a good place to study and it is encouraging to see the city becoming more cosmopolitan and multi-cultural. When I finish my course I hope to get a good job in computers, wherever that might happen to be. I'm not shy about experiencing yet another new culture! §@ªÌ:§õ·ç·½¥ý¥Í(¹q«H¤uµ{ºÓ¤h) Just like all my friends from Taiwan, I came to study in the UK in high spirits. Although an unfamiliar environment, with totally different customs to my own, I didn't feel too much of a culture shock, though life in Belfast is Clearly dictated by different weather, living conditions and traditions. When we arrived, senior students were very hospitable and took us around to see our new surroundings. Much of the architecture still retains its original style from hundreds of years ago, which gave me a wonderful feeling of timelessness. I admire the people for their enthusiasm to preserve their culture and realised that the confidence of a country starts from a recognition and an appreciation of its own heritage. The main problem I encountered was the food (!), which was not what I had expected - probably because of the cold weather and the way it is cooked. However, I used the opportunity to promote our wonderful Chinese cuisine and have upgraded my own cooking skills by exchanging recipes with international friends. Although Belfast is somewhat remote from mainland UK, Queen's still attracts numerous international students. In the University, there are plenty of opportunities to meet friends from other countries and we often come together for great parties. In Belfast, the drinking culture of the local people must not be overlooked! Friends usually gather after class to relax in the joyful atmosphere of local pubs. Here beer is much cheaper than in Taiwan, so having a few more pints makes life even better! During the day, as a keen shopper, I often go down to the city centre to buy some of the unbelievable 'low-priced' items on sale. I also traveled to many countryside areas around Northern Ireland at the weekends. I really appreciate the way people focus much more on their family life and spend time on keeping fabulous gardens. The houses, gardens and farms here make a beautiful picture and I hope one day I will be able to afford a similar dream house and to enjoy a beautiful family life. The level of teaching and research in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is equivalent to the best universities in Taiwan. I was pleased to win a Chevening Scholarship to a good university like Queen's, and I feel I have a great chance of getting a superior job when I return to Taiwan with a high-quality qualification. §@ªÌ:³¯«~¬Â¤p©j(3Ó¤ëµu´Á^»y¶i×) ·í¸¾÷Êï¹F^°êÛ´°§Æ´µ¬¥¾÷³õ¡A¦bÂà¾÷µ¥«ÝÂà¾÷¨ìBelfast ®É¡A¤ßùØ·Q¯u¤£´±¬Û«H§Ú¯uªº¨Ó^°ê¹C¾Ç¤F¡A¤ßùØ·Q¯u¤£´±¬Û«H§Ú¯uªº¨Ó^°ê¹C¾Ç¤F¡AMy dreams come true!
