Doctor of Education (TESOL)

EdD established in the Graduate School of Education in January 1997.

Partly taught and partly research-based doctorate.

TESOL strand is specifically aimed at professionals engaged in English language teacher education in Taiwan.

 

Aims

Critically evaluate the research findings of published, empirical studies

Make use of appropriate research methods to conduct educational research

Design small-scale, class-based research projects to investigate the local context


Entry Requirments

    Primary Degree (or equivalent)

    Minimum of 5 years full-time professional experience in the Education sector

    IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent)


Fees

Total Fee: 17, 100 pounds sterling (2008/09入學)

Payable in 3 instalments


Content

                     
9 taught modules PLUS Dissertation
                     
Students with Master degree normally take 8 modules (or less).
                     
Students must satisfactorily complete:

              - both specialist modules

              - at least four research modules

              - two additional modules

Specialist TESOL module (1): researching TESOL

This module aims to enable you to conduct research into current practices and approaches to the teaching of English as a Foreign Language.

The focus is specifically on conducting small-scale, class-based research as a means of improving educational practice.


Specialist TESOL module (2): developing interactional awareness

This module looks at alternative ways of researching the role of interaction in      language learning. This includes:

 

-          Interaction and SLA (second language acquisition)

-          Interaction in different contexts

-          Interaction and learner and teacher roles

  1. Educational Research: an overview

  2. Quantitative Research: Methods, Data and Theory

  3. Qualitative Research: Methods, Data and Theory

  4. Evaluative Research

  5. The Professional as Researcher

  6. Experimental and Survey Methods in Educational Research

  7. Methodologies of Voice in Qualitative Enquiry

Assessment

Minimum of 80% Attendance

Taught modules: 5,000 word assignment per module (40,000 words)

Dissertation by research: 40,000 words

No exam

 

Application

Application should be made on the appropriate form and submitted by 28 February prior to academic year of entry.
