COURSE INFORMATION
The purpose of this course is to provide teachers, especially those in management positions, with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of theories and issues in school management, in order to reflect critically on their own practice and that in their school/college.

The aims of this option are to encourage teachers to examine the wider social, economic and political contexts of schooling, which shape fundamentally the purposes and tasks of school managers. In particular, the aims of the option are to promote good management practice in schools in Northern Ireland and to encourage school managers to reflect critically on their practice in order to improve it.

For this named award, students must accumulate at least 60 M from the study of the following core modules:

220EDU717 Leadership in Schools and Colleges 20 M Points
120EDU716 Managing Educational Change: Improving the 20 M points

220EDU813 Middle Management Issues: 20 M points
The Role of Head of Department
120EDU916 Public Management and Education 20 M points

The remaining modules are chosen from the wide menu of modules on offer under the whole MSc/MEd programme. A book of modules for MSc/Med programmes will be available in March/April from our website or by contacting the Postgraduate Office. On successful completion of the core modules in this option students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of relevant theories of organisation and management and education policy processes and apply these understandings to the issues arising within their practice and their own schools/colleges
  • Show an awareness and understanding of the influences which create the contexts within which schools must operate
  • Critically reflect on the application of these understandings to the environmental issues which must be confronted by school managers
The MSc/MEd are awarded to those students who have accumulated 180 M Points (including a dissertation equivalent to 60 M points).
