Part-time: 2 – 5 years
Full Time: 1 Year (September 2008 – September 2009)
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should normally hold either an honours degree or equivalent qualification plus at least two years professional experience in an education, training or professionally relevant context; or a degree or equivalent qualification with at least five years professional experience in an education, training or professionally relevant context; or a degree or equivalent qualification in an area relevant to the subject of the masters degree, where study towards the award is not dependent on relevant professional experience. (This third route to admission will normally only apply to appropriate MSc options and may be restricted to holders of II.2 honours degree or higher qualifications.)
Students need to have relevant professional experience and have access to a professionally relevant working environment. It is advisable to ensure that your employer will allow you to avail of opportunities for placement in different institutions. Criminal record checks will be required.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
In the case of international students (from outside the European Union), it is not possible to study on a part-time basis unless you are already in the UK for other reasons and have obtained an appropriate visa. It is the student’s responsibility to check visa requirements for part-time study in the UK. We have a minimum entry point of IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent for international students.
COURSE INFORMATION
This course, which been developed in consultation with principals of special schools and individuals with expertise within this specialist field, is designed to facilitate the professional development of teachers and other related professionals who work, or wish to work, in this area.
The aim is to enable the study of the theory and practice underpinning the specialist area, with the accompanying opportunity to engage in associated experiential work.
The award requires the study of the following core modules
Current Policy and Issues in Inclusion and SEN 20 M Points
Understanding Autistic Spectrum Disorders 30 M Points
Models and Methods of Intervention 30 M Points
Assessment in Special Educational Needs 20 M Points
The remaining modules are chosen from the wide menu of modules on offer under the whole MSc/MEd programme. A book of modules for MSc/MEd programmes will be available in March/April from our website or by contacting the Postgraduate Office.
The MSc/MEd are awarded to those students who have accumulated 180 M Points (including a dissertation equivalent to 60 M points).
On completion of the option students will have:
· developed a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the special needs of children, young people and adults within the
specialist area;
· shown evidence of critical reflection on their professional practice and be able to apply relevant research literature to both
personal and professional experience;
· acquired a range of specialised practical skills which will allow them to teach and support pupils and students in a variety of
settings;
· developed the teamwork skills required to work in partnership, supporting and advising other colleagues;
· had the opportunity to apply their knowledge in settings different to their current work situation.
