MSc in Educational Multimedia

Overview

The MSc and Diploma in Educational Multimedia (EMM) are higher level qualifications which should be of immediate interest and value to everyone embarking on or already engaged in a career in education, training, multimedia or information and communications technology. The MSc and PGDip share an academic programme, but MSc students undertake an additional Project and Dissertation on completion of the taught modules.

Both programmes offer an opportunity to explore some of the latest multimedia and Web development technologies and their applications to education and training. The modular and flexible structure of the programme is designed to permit a flexible study pattern with students being able to complete their course in one, two or three years. All classes are held in the evening.

The Computer Based Learning unit within the School of Computer Science has a proven track record of teaching computer skills to students who (before joining the course) would have described themselves as having little knowledge of computers or computing. The course content is structured so that it enables graduates of any discipline to gain a higher degree in Educational Multimedia. The modules provide the foundational knowledge and skills associated with multimedia programming and also investigate the educational use of the World Wide Web and commercially produced teaching resources. Additionally, the modules explore the pedagogical, technological and production disciplines of EMM with particular emphasis on the design and delivery of effective multimedia.

Pre-requisite

An honours degree or equivalent qualification. Alternatively, a degree or equivalent qualification held by suitably experienced candidates in education, training, or Information and Communications Technology.

This course is available on the Belfast campus for the 2005/2006 intake of students.

Module

Module 1 - Teaching & Learning in Computer Based Learning [130CBL710]

This module explores the theoretical and pedagogical issues underlying a successful computer based learning package. It will consider issues ranging from motivation and interaction, to the social implications of the information revolution. The module will give students an opportunity to experience a constructivist learning environment, and will also use group learning. All students will have an opportunity to participate in electronic communication as part of the course.

Module 2 - Multimedia Authoring [130CBL711]

Using Macromedia Director as an example of an authoring tool, this module will enable students to gain experience in designing and implementing a multimedia program. No previous experience of using multimedia tools is assumed, and the module will use a program of practicals to build confidence in putting together a simple piece of multimedia. The associated theory component will provide a background in good design techniques. The module will be taught using a mix of tutorials, formal lectures and practical work.

Module 3 - Multimedia Programming [230CBL712]

Building on the experience gained in 130CBL711, this module will introduce multimedia programming. No previous experience of computer programming is assumed, and the module will describe generic programming techniques which may be applied to other situations. The practical work for the module will involve becoming familiar with Lingo, which is the programming language underlying Macromedia Director. Students will learn how to customise a package produced in Director to produce an interactive multimedia experience for the user.

Module 4 - Using the Web for Instructional Technology [230CBL713]

This module is based upon Macormedia Dreamweaver and Macromedia Flash as authoring tools to produce an effective Website. No previous experience of web site design is assumed, and the module will demonstrate good technique for design and implementation of a website.

Module 5 - Project and Dissertation [360CBL709]

This is the project and dissertation phase of the Master's course and gives students the opportunity to examine in depth a particular aspect of Computer Based Learning. The project will usually have a teaching component and will permit the student to demonstrate practical skills learnt on the course. The dissertation is an academic justification of the content, design and theory which is used in the project.

Fee Reduction Scholarships
A number of fee reduction scholarships worth £1,500 are available for applicants for 2008 entry to the following taught Masters courses:

  • MSc Electronics
  • MSc Telecommunications
  • MSc Educational Multimedia
  • MSc Computer and Electronic Security (awaiting final approval)

Conditions for the award of a scholarship:

    • With the exception of applicants who already receive a fee reduction, all international applicants (i.e. non EU students) accepted onto either the MSc in Electronics or the MSc in Telecommunications and who enrol full-time on the course in September 2008 will receive a fee reduction scholarship of £1,500 to be paid during the year.
    • All students enrolling onto either the MSc in Electronics or the MSc in Telecommunications in September 2008 will gain automatic entry onto our PhD programme subject to acceptable performance and completion of the MSc programme and the availability of suitable supervisors.
    • All applicants accepted onto the MSc in Educational Multimedia and who enrol full-time on the course in September 2008 will be considered for the award of a fee reduction scholarship of £1,500 to be paid during the year. One scholarship will be available and will be awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the School, best fulfils or exceeds the criteria for entry to the course.
    • Students need not apply separately for the fee reduction scholarship; application is automatic upon acceptance onto an eligible programme. Students entitled to or already in receipt of a fee-reduction from the university are not eligible for the award of this School based fee reduction scholarship. The decision to award a scholarship will be based on the information given in the student’s application form. Scholarships will be paid in two instalments.
